Diabetes and Chronic Illness Summary
by: Marie Milleage
The Self-management of Diabetes and Chronic Illness seminar, presented by Laurie Long, PhD, Community Health Program Manager at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, encouraged making and following an action plan for individuals living with chronic illnesses.
Questions from both the audience and Dr. Long helped to identify areas of specific concern and led to the introduction of self-management skills to enjoy healthier lives.
Dr. Long demonstrated how to build the right size healthy plate with good food choices and distributed Nutrition Facts, Choose My Plate, Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test, and other handouts. Exercise was encouraged and Robson Ranch residents were acknowledged for exercising and sponsoring the Robson Olympics.
Various steps shown on charts encouraged individuals to monitor symptoms, deal with problems related to diabetes and other chronic illnesses, use medications appropriately, recognize depression, and communicate with healthcare professionals.
The seminar introduced two new workshops at Robson Ranch that were designed by Stanford University. Participation in each workshop is by registration only and requires a commitment to attend at least four of six sessions. Look for more information on this website about the Diabetes Self-Management Workshop to be held in March and the Illness Workshop scheduled for September.
