Healthy Heart Seminar for Women
Marie Milleage

Heart disease is the nation’s number one killer. In June, Robson Ranch women gathered to learn how to maintain a healthy heart and how heart attack symptoms in women differ from those of men. Over one-third of American women die yearly of heart disease; more than those who die from breast cancer. The risk of heart attack and stroke increasing with age.

Women are less likely to have chest pain with neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort of sensations of “heartburn.” Both genders can experience shortness of breath, nausea of vomiting, sweating, dizziness, or unexplained fatigue. Not all people acknowledge the possibility of a heart attack when experiencing one or more of these signs.

A detailed, educational presentation, given by Dr. Saritha Dodla, Cardiologist, Excel Cardiac Care and The Heart Hospital Baylor Denton, included the anatomy of the heart. She explained the heart’s function, the cardiovascular system, interaction with other body’s organs, and the disease process. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot blocks the blood’s flow through a coronary artery that supplies blood to a part of the heart muscle. This interrupted blood flow damages or destroys some of the heart muscle.

Women, protect yourselves by reducing the risks of heart attacks: discussions with a healthcare provider regarding family history of heart disease, appropriate annual physical exams and medical tests, check blood pressure and cholesterol levels, routine activity, not smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, and a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Elizabeth Stasny, Registered Dietitian, Baylor, Denton, clarified nutritional information and gave an overview of heart-healthy eating. An outline of daily requirements in various foods categories emphasized fruits, vegetables, and fiber as necessary staples. It is important to read food labels. Elizabeth advised limiting or eliminating salt, sugar, and fast foods. Studies show that a high consumption of fruits and vegetables with lower blood pressure and a reduced risk for heart disease.

Preventing or controlling heart disease is accomplished by routine medical examinations and tests, being active, and eating a healthy diet.

DATCU credit union provided refreshments and door prizes. Living Well seminars are free and open to Robson Ranch residents. Advanced registration at www.rrlwc.com is required to ensure sufficient seating and refreshments.
