Home Health and Home Care Comparison
by Marie Milleage

In December 2016, the difference between home health care and health care was clarified by Christina Grupico, Administrator of Living Well Senior Care, a non-medical, local family owned and operated agency, and Patrick Rogers, VP of Marketing at ARC Home Health Services.

“Home health care and home care are not mutually exclusive services,” explained Christina Grupico. Home care services do not provide medical assistance. The certified nurse assistants, home health aides, and others with caregiving experience, offer companionship and assist with reminders to take medications, bathing, dressing and grooming, incontinence care, toileting help, household chores, meal preparation or delivery, and transportation.

Patrick Rogers explained how home health care agencies operate differently. A physician’s order is required to arrange and provide at home, follow-up care after a patient is discharged from a hospital or surgical facility. Services are rendered by nurses, medical social workers, physical, occupational or speech therapists, chaplains, or other medical professionals who address clinical and rehabilitative needs such as therapy towards rehabilitation, perform medical tests, monitor health status, manage prescription medications, and provide skilled nursing, pain management, wound care, IV therapy, and injections.

When researching home assistance, reputable agencies should be licensed, carry a bond to cover their employees, and do annual, extensive employee background checks.

Home health and home care can be utilized in tandem to provide the assistance for recovery. A physician’s order is a requirement for payment by Medicare, Medicaid, or private health insurance company. Medicare requires that a patient be “homebound” and have a “skilled need” to qualify for payment of the services. A physician’s order is unnecessary for home care. The individual pays out of pocket, through Medicaid, or long-term care insurance, if specified in the policy. Medicare and private health insurance will not cover home care expenses.

Corie Lingerfelt, Business Development Manager at Living Well Senior Care, distributed reusable bags containing helpful information about the services of her organization and ARC. Door prizes and refreshments of delicious wassail and holiday cookies were provided by DATCU credit union.
