Medicare Up-to-date Information
by: Marie Milleage
On September 27, Robson Ranch resident and Medicare Specialist, Jackie Hixson, explained the changes in Medicare information. With the enrollment period from October 15 to December 7, 2017, Jackie urged residents to go ahead and make a decision to register for Medicare or make changes in their current plans. The outlook for 2018 is critical with changes and options differing than what was previously offered.
Things to consider when applying for Medicare or making changes are examining the types of coverage being offered and deciding on the best option for you, including co-payments, coinsurance and deductibles. Medicare choices are Original Medicare, Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance), as well as a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes both Part A and Part B, such as an HMO or PPO. Another option is a Supplemental policy offered by a private company to help you pay costs not covered by Medicare.
If you currently receive Medicare and did not previously enroll in a Medicare Part D plan you can do so during general open enrollment but a late enrollment penalty may apply. Individuals who are currently enrolled in a Medicare Part D prescription plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan and want to keep their coverage do not have to do anything during open enrollment. Just make sure the plan will continue to be available in 2018.
Jackie introduced Dan Ballenger who agreed that Medicare is good quality medical coverage for seniors at reasonable prices when compared to available alternatives. Dan and Jackie remained after the program to answer additional questions.
