Neuropathy Seminar Summary
Marie Milleage
Jason Meyer, chiropractor, presented a neuropathy seminar on October 5 and explained that our overall health changes as we age. If left untreated, these health conditions can become chronic, long lasting, and complicated.
He explained that every part of the body has peripheral nerves that are responsible for sending signals to the brain with damage to these nerves resulting in peripheral neuropathy.
Diabetes was discussed and can lead to vision loss, circulation problems, heart problems, amputation, and neuropathy. Various slides were shown and Dr. Meyer warned that symptoms of neuropathy can worsen over time -- numbness, burning pain, cramping, prickling or tingling, sharp electrical pain, pain when walking, and loss of sleep from foot pain.
Physicians may prescribe one or more medications to treat the pain, but medications do not prevent the progression of symptoms. As symptoms increase, drug dosages may be increased to offer a level of relief. The result may be patient dependency on the medication.
It was advised that the development of a treatment plan that combines nutrition, exercise, and other therapies, may gradually relieve the patient of pain and anxiety and eliminate the need for habit forming drugs. Treatment goals are to manage the condition causing neuropathy and to relieve the symptoms.
DATCU credit union provided seminar refreshments and door prizes. Living Well seminars are free and open to Robson Ranch residents. For more information, please contact Marie Milleage at milleagem@mygrande.net or view the website, www.rrlwc.com. Advanced registration is required.
